La Quinta Arts Foundation
This desert site is comprised of 25 acres abutting a mountain with panoramic views of the valley behind. The art foundation’s purpose is to sponsor an annual art show which attracts over 35,000 art lovers each year from most all states in the country. The outside show is held each year where 100’s of artist exhibit their work.
The program called for parking 125 cars as well as parking for the artists. Additionally, 3-1/2 acres were set aside for the actual exhibit area which included eating facilities, entertainment center and a park like amphitheater for just relaxing. The program called for a 60,000 sq. ft. facility which is to be located on an elevated plateau overlooking the entire site and the valley beyond. The structure includes administration facilities, art classrooms, restaurants, lecture halls, and exhibition facilities.
The elliptical reflection pool with a sunken waterfall at the entrance to the structure brings the visitor to a skylight circular spiraling ramp to the upper level. The visitor is then surprised by a panoramic view of the entire down valley view. The board room, in the form of a tent structure, reminds the visitor of the regions American Indian history. The colored cylinders are designed to house visiting artists with their own studio and sleeping facilities.
